Open Data Meetup: Reporting on the Enviornment

A meetup on “Using Data To Report On the Environment” was held at Phandeeyar: Myanmar Innovation Lab on October 5, 2016. Key purpose of the meetup was to discuss on the how open data and mapping could help better manage vital natural resources. Beth Walker UK Director and Editor from, and Tar Yar Maung of Tanintharyi Natural Resource Watch and ALARM/EcoDev, were the key speakers at the event.


Beth shared about Open Data and Mapping from an Environmental Journalists's perspective while Tar Yar Maung discussed about collecting and sharing data related to Natural Resources based on her rich local experiences. 




The event was attended by 31 participants, many of whom were journalists who interesting in data journalism. Both Local and International media houses attended the event.


Moemaka Media's Meetup @Phandeeyar: Journalism in the Digital Age


A meetup on “Journalism in the Digital Age” was held at Phandeeyar: Myanmar Innovation Lab on August 27, 2016. Key purpose of the meetup was to discuss on the usage of information technology, multimedia and data in the digital age.

The meetup was organized jointly by Moemaka and Phandeeyar. Thar Nyunt Oo, Editor of Voice of America, Esther Htusan, journalist at the associated press and a Pulitzer Prize winner, and Thet Aung, Open Data Manager of Phandeeyar were the key speakers at the event. Thar Nyunt Oo discussed about the recent changes in journalism based on his experiences. Esther Htusan shared her investigative journalism experiences using IT. Thet Aung from Phandeeyar discuss on Data Journalism, Open Data and the Open Development Myanmar Portal. The event was attended by around 40 participants, many of whom were young journalists. Both Local and International media houses attended the event.



Open Development Myanmar Soft Launch


On the 22nd August at Phandeeyar: Myanmar Innovation Lab, Open Development Myanmar was soft launched to test its functionalities, to introduce Open Data, to present the use cases of Open Data, to identify potential data partners and gather feedback and inputs on the Open Development Myanmar Platform and Open Data movement from the participants. Open Development Myanmar is a leading initiative of Phandeeyar’s Open Data Program and Myanmar country partner of, a regional open data platform. The program is supported by USAID via PACT's Mekong Partnership for the Environment. 

Right after the presentation of Open Development Myanmar and sharing sessions of OMI and Myanmar Now, it was Q & A session which led to the most critical parts of Open Data movement in Myanmar. The hands-on discussion was continued to keep the heat, the groups discussed the role of Government, CSOs, and Media for Open Data and lesson learned on a data-driven story or social movement in the past.
